The Upper Room Disciplines Study Groups in 2007-8
A message from Rev. Howard Hockenbury

Currently there are 23 adults who are striving to mature in Christ in one of two small groups meeting weekly at Atlanta Bread.  Participants meet to extend support to one another while reflecting on the scriptures and daily devotions developed around The Revised Common Lectionary included in The Upper Room Disciplines 2007 devotional. Rev Howard Hockenbury serves as the resource person and convener giving oversight to the care and development of these study groups

Even though participants come primarily from Bluffton UMC and Church of the Palms UMC, these groups are open to anyone, regardless of local church affiliation, who is interested in exploring the value of daily devotions with weekly group reflection. It has become a setting for mutual support and spiritual enrichment. The groups are open-ended, but you may enter in or out of the weekly sessions depending upon your particular life situation at the time.

Each session includes the following process:
  1. Welcoming and Logging in – Building community through sharing what has been happening in our lives since our last gathering.
  2. Centering – Focus on the presence of God in our midst
  3. Group Sharing on Scriptures and Devotions of the week
  4. Action Response -  Focus on how God is leading us as a result of our sharing
  5. Prayer Concerns
  6. Closing Prayer
If you are interested in being part of an existing group or desire to join with others in establishing a new group at a more convenient time, contact Howard Hockenbury by phone (705-2720) or by email at howardhock@davtv.com. Copies of the devotional are available at a cost of $15.

Visitors are welcome to attend one of the sessions and explore for themselves, on a trial basis, its benefits for their lives.

These groups will be starting their third year of operation in September. The Monday morning group meets weekly from 10-11:30 am at Atlanta Bread beginning on September 10th. The Tuesday evening group meets weekly from 7-8:30 pm at Atlanta Bread beginning on September 11th.
